Book & documentary

Two things, one research

They share what is found. They are not the same project, and neither is finished.

The book

Written by the son who took the company on.

He left school at fifteen to join it and was running it at seventeen. The book is the whole of it, from the inside — the units, the vehicles, the people, and what it took to feed a crew in a field before first light.

The title is not settled, and will not be until there is a publisher to settle it with. The cover below is a concept — the author line on it is a placeholder.

Book cover concept: the title Feed the Camera set large in cream serif on black, with the subtitle 'The untold story of British film location catering' in gold, above an archive photograph of a film unit gathered around a milk churn outside a catering vehicle

The documentary

A short film, made from the same research.

Built from recorded conversations, the family's archive, and whatever the people who were there are willing to share. The research is the urgent part — the people who can still remember any of it are not getting younger.

Nothing anyone sends is used without asking them first.

Documentary poster concept: a crew list on black with every role ticked off — directed by, camera operator, gaffer, continuity, unit drivers — except Location Catering, which is picked out in gold against an empty dotted line, above the title Feed the Camera and the line 'Fifty years. No screen credit.'

Where the dates come from

Letters, call sheets, movement orders, invoices.

Paperwork like this is how a remembered job becomes a dated one. If you have any, it is worth more than you think.

Keep up with it

Hear when either one moves.

One letter a month, when there is something worth sending. If there is nothing, nothing gets sent.

Unsubscribe whenever. The list is not shared or sold.
